Calabash Elks Lodge #2679 Veteran’s Affair Committee donated $500 to the SFC Eugene Ashley Jr. Memorial Center in Wilmington which is a transitional living center for veterans operated by Good Shepherd Ministries of Wilmington, Inc. Calabash Elks Veterans Affairs Committee donated $500.00 to the "Canine Angels Inc." Pictured above are Austin Sammon Veterans Committee Co/Chairman, Rick Kaplan, President of Canine Angels Inc. and "The Canine Angels". Rick trains Dogs for needy Veterans and presents them to Veterans at no charge.

Calabash Elks Veterans Affairs Committee conducted a Mini-Golf Tournament Fund Raiser in Calabash, North Carolina on October 6, 2011. All proceeds are used for Veterans Activities during the year.

The Calabash Elks Veterans Affairs Committee presented a check for $500.00 to Kris Tourtellotte, Director of the Veterans Welcome Home and Resource Center, Little River, S.C. The Resource Center assists Vets in Disability Claims, Government Sponsored Benefits, Homeless Assistance, PTSD and many other needs. Pictured from Left to Right - Gloria Sammon, V.A.C. The Lodge VAC Committee held its annual flea market to raise money for Veterans Activities. Pictured is Dianne and George collecting from customers and a view of the merchandise offered.

The Calabash Elks Lodge participated in the annual Memorial Day ceremony held at the Calabash Fire Station along with many other local organizations. After the raising of the Flag all WWII and Korean war veterans were asked to stand and be recognized, the oldest veteran present enlisted in 1918. Exalted Ruler Teddy Acton was recognized and spoke to the assembled crowd.
The Calabash Elks Lodge was presented a US Flag from the Joint Provisional Reconstruction Team Paktika headquartered in Sharana, Afghanistan. This Flag was flown in the face of the enemy on April 17, 2011. Along with the Flag is a certificate of authenticity. The Calabash Elks Lodge Veterans Committee recently traveled to the North Carolina Veterans Home in Fayetteville NC and held a barbecue for the residents. Almost 100 veterans make the facility home. At its regular meeting on May 11th Exalted Ruler Teddy Acton presented Charlie Tetta with a plaque, flag and Elks watch for being named NC Elks Veterans Volunteer of the Year. Charlie has been tireless in his support of the Veterans Programs of the Calabash Elks Lodge. Pictured are Austin Sammon, VAC Chairman, Charlie Tetta, and ER Teddy Acton.

Elks Treat Veterans to Fishing Trip

The Calabash Elks Lodge treated Veterans from the North Carolina Veterans Home in Fayetteville, Shallotte Assisted Living and Summit Place Assisted Living to a day of fishing at Sunset Beach. Following their time on the Sunset Beach pier they returned to the Elks Lodge for lunch and a game of bingo. Each Veteran won a cap or t-shirt

On Saturday March 26th, the Calabash Elks Lodge hosted 15 Wounded Warriors for breakfast. The Wounded Warriors are on their way home to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Wachington DC. after a weeks stay in Myrtle Beach thanks to the generousity of many local organizations, businesses and merchants. In addition to breakfast, each Wounded Warrior was presented a Sunset Beach cap and a bag of candy before resuming their trip.
Knitting Is Our Passion" are a group of ladies who meet weekly at the Knitting Up A Storm knitting shop in North Myrtle Beach to knit, socialize and share a knitting project with each other. Last year they made blankets which were donated to the residents at the North Carolina Veterans Nursing Home in Fayetteville, NC. This year they are knitting head huggers which will sent to soldiers in Afghanistan. They have knitted 55 of the head huggers which are used to keep the soldiers heads warm under their helmets. The Head huggers will be included in packages the Calabash Elks Veterans Activity Committee are preparing to send. On January, 25, 2011, the Calabash Elks Veterans Affairs Committee sponsored a Coffee, Donut & Juice Day at the Shallotte Assisted Living, Shallotte, N. C.

Calabash Elks Veterans Affairs Committee hosted a Thanksgiving Dinner at the V.A. Hospital, Fayetteville, N.C. Approximately 110 people were served Turkey and all the trimmings. Attached are pictures of those V.A.C. Members who served at this event.

VETERANS AFFAIRS COMMITTEE HARD AT WORK!
Two members of our Calabash Elks Veterans Committee, Bill Hopkins and Bob Smith, recently made a trip to the United States Marine base in Parris Island. There they presented a check for $1,000.00 to be used by the Marine Corps Community Services organization benefiting both Parris Island and Beaufort, SC, Marine Air Corps veterans. This money was raised through various activities lead by, and through the tireless efforts of, our Calabash Elks VAC! Well done
